Soon after leaving his job, Gallo took an acting class in New York City — which wasn't too far from his home in New Jersey — and fell in love with the craft. He decided he wanted to be an actor and moved to the Big Apple to chase his dreams. His car insurance is also fairly cheap because he's on his parents' plan and reimburses them for the cost. His only other insurance cost is renters insurance for his apartment, since he receives free health insurance through the state. "I am happier now than when I was working for the insurance company," he says.

And perhaps best of all, money — from selling the electricity generated by the wind turbines studding the flat green fields stretching out to the North Sea. A slice of the cash goes to the villagers themselves, with the local buy-in making this windy farming enclave near the border with Denmark a showcase for ways to push ahead with renewable energy projects. The S&P Global Clean Energy Index of shares in companies with clean energy-related businesses has fallen 26% over the past year, even as broader market indexes have surged to records. In sub-Saharan Africa, where half the population lacks access to electricity, renewable projects face even steeper challenges with financing. In Nigeria, where blackouts are an everyday event for about half of the country’s 213 million people, some 14 solar projects have stalled because the finances don’t add up.

Home Depot said Thursday that it will open four new distribution centers as it chases more sales from remodelers, contractors and other home professionals. Each facility averages approximately 500,000 square feet — about five times the size of the average Home Depot store. That gives Home Depot a lot of room to grow as it adds capabilities to handle pros' entire orders, he said. Home Depot is changing other aspects of its business to support pros who handle complex and pricey projects. He said Home Depot is trying to bring to the pro business what it once did to DIY — turn itself into a one-stop shop.

The Target logo is seen on its store on 42nd Street in Times Square, New York City. Grocery drives about 20% of Target's annual sales compared with nearly 60% of Walmart's annual sales in the U.S. Some of Target's stores are also losing a separate traffic driver: pharmacies. CVS Health said in January that it would close some locations in Target stores, as part of a broader plan by CVS to reduce its store count. CVS and Target declined to say how many of the pharmacies would be shuttered.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares rose in Asia on Thursday after Wall Street stocks recovered much of their sharp losses from a day before. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 climbed 1% to 5,000.62, clawing back more than two-thirds of its loss from Tuesday. It was the single strongest force lifting the S&P 500 index. Most companies in the S&P 500 have been topping analysts’ forecasts for the last three months of 2023. Hopes for stronger growth in 2024 from a solid economy have been another reason the S&P 500 has set 10 records already this year.

Is the Senate Becoming the House?
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( Carl Hulse | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In 2008, as the nation faced a catastrophic financial crisis, the House did what it sometimes does — veered off the rails. It was the steadier Senate that had to step in and take over, find a way to approve the legislation and show the House how it was done. When the unruly House, with its treacherous two-year election cycle, melts down, the Senate is expected to step up, providing the adult supervision needed in the legislative world. The august Senate — at least on the Republican side — is becoming more like its chaotic counterpart across the Rotunda every day. The Senate Republican Conference, as it is known, is more publicly divided and feuding than at any time in recent memory, a rare development for a group led by Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, who has always taken great pains to conceal internal disputes.

I worked as a flight attendant for two years and picked up tips for saving money while traveling. Don't waste your money on food and water at the airport or the overpriced snacks on the plane. But don't wait until you get on the plane — flight attendants don't usually have that much power. You already paid for the ticket, taxi, and luggage, so don't waste your money on overpriced airport water. It's almost never worth it to exchange money at the airportIt's usually cheapest to exchange your money at a bank.

HONG KONG (AP) — Asia markets mostly advanced Friday after Wall Street recouped most of the week's earlier losses and Japan reported slowing inflation, which may keep its ultra-low interest rates steady. Japan’s inflation slowed for a second straight month, increasing the chance that the Bank of Japan will keep its ultra-low interest rates unchanged at its meeting next week. Hong Kong stocks were on track for their third consecutive week of losses as investors remain worried about the gloomy economic prospects. The market was broadly steadier as Treasury yields in the bond market slowed their jump from earlier in the week. On the losing end of Wall Street were several financial companies that reported weaker results for the end of 2023 than analysts expected.

After all their economic misfortune, they'll still face a turbulent housing market and potentially tens of thousands of dollars' worth of necessary updates to boomers' aging houses. In his 2022 paper, "Who will buy the baby boomers' homes when they leave them? ", Engelhardt argued that mass aging would send ripples through the housing market but fail to push down prices significantly. After that point, demand for home purchases will once again outpace supply as millennials buy more homes and younger generations, like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, file in behind them. The timing of boomers' exit will mostly benefit younger generations, like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who should find themselves on steadier footing than their predecessors.

London CNN —Alibaba has dropped plans to spin off its cloud computing arm, sending its stock tumbling, because of US controls on chip exports to China which the company said had created “uncertainties” for the division’s prospects. “We will focus on developing a sustainable growth model for Cloud Intelligence Group under the fluid circumstances,” the company said. During talks with Biden Wednesday, Xi described the restrictions as “technological containment,” according to a senior US official. Biden said in response that the United States is not going to provide technology to China that could be used against it by the Chinese military. During his news conference following the summit, Biden summed up his approach to the Chinese leader. Xi at one point called on the United States to “not scheme to suppress or contain China,” Chinese state media reported. In the talks, Biden made clear to Xi that he viewed Hamas as separate from the Palestinians. As host of the meeting, Biden walked out of the building first to welcome Xi. Speaking after Biden, Xi offered starker view of US-China ties.
